Commenting on the Tir Dewi helpline that operates in support of farmers in some parts of Wales, Janet Finch-Saunders MS – the Shadow Minister for Climate Change, Energy and Rural Affairs – said:
“The struggles that farmers face, from bovine TB to the pressures affecting any business owner, from the astonishingly low price of a sheep’s fleece to the isolation many farmers live with – especially since the start of the pandemic – are sadly all too prevalent. Farmers are the guardians and custodians of our land, who tend and nurture it, their livestock and contribute massively to the economy and food security of Wales.”
Tir Dewi, a bilingual support network – which is supported by The Church in Wales (Dioceses of St David’s) and the Prince’s Countryside Fund – originally provided its service in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, and Pembrokeshire. Since July 2020, this has expanded to include Powys, and, in September 2020 will also include Gwynedd, Conwy, and the Isle of Anglesey.
Mrs Finch-Saunders said:
“I wholeheartedly support this fantastic scheme and the valuable work it does, and look forward to it being rolled out across all Wales in the near future.”
