Welsh Conservatives have backed calls from the Children’s Commissioner to publish new guidance on teacher complaints ‘as a matter of urgency’.
The call follows BBC Wales figures that show ‘over half of accusations made against teachers and teaching assistants by pupils in Wales turned out to be false, malicious or unfounded’.
Shadow Minister for Education, Angela Burns AM, said:
“I fully support the call made by the Children’s Commissioner. The Welsh Labour Government should look very carefully at this issue and get fresh guidelines out to schools as soon as possible.
“This is a sensitive issue that should be examined again, particularly in light of these troubling statistics.
“There is a fine line that must be drawn between pupils retaining their confidence to speak out and teachers’ wellbeing and confidence in the system.
“Both are of paramount importance and strict guidelines allowing both teacher and pupil an equal say are vital.”
