The England and Wales Cricket Board has announced that Cardiff will be the base for one of the eight teams in the new T20 city-based competition starting in 2020.
The new T20 teams will be run centrally rather than by the counties themselves, but all 18 first-class counties have been promised £1m extra funding per year.
Welcoming the news, cricket-lover and South Wales East AM, Mohammad Asghar, said:
“This is outstanding news for Welsh cricket and will spark a new generation of fans and lovers of the game.
“The prospect of a new T20 franchise competition has been on the horizon for quite some time and it is great to see it coming to fruition with Wales’ capital city set to play a prominent part.
“Wales has a rich cricketing history and this could be a game-changer in enhancing the sport’s production line.
“With new audiences and the potential to be a catalyst to uncover our next Matt Maynard, Robert Croft or Mark Wallace – this is a fantastic development for Glamorgan and for cricket across Wales.”
