Welsh Conservatives have today welcomed the biggest investment in a generation into tidal power in Wales.
The Conservative UK Government will invest £20 million per year across the UK in Tidal Stream electricity as part of its flagship renewable energy auction scheme, kickstarting a brand-new chapter for Wales’s tidal industry and creating jobs across Welsh coastal regions.
The announcement will strengthen energy security by adding to our diverse, renewable electricity supply and create jobs across the Wales’s coastal communities.
Wales already has excellent tidal stream resources and is well positioned to play a global leading role in marine energy. The Menter Mon Morlais project, based off the coast of Holy Island, has major potential to put Ynys Môn at the heart of our energy security.
Commenting on the announcement, Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Climate Change, Janet Finch Saunders MS said:
“With 1,200km of coastline and excellent tidal resource, Wales is perfectly placed to capitalise on clean marine energy.
“Today’s announcement is an important step in our transition to New Zero and underlines the Conservative Government’s commitment to creating secure, green jobs for Welsh communities.
“The investment today provides a major push for Welsh tidal power to become a key part of the next generation of renewable electricity projects, which are needed to strengthen energy security as we work to reduce our dependency on fossil fuels.
“The Conservatives are once again delivering for Wales as we build back a better, greener and more sustainable future.”
