The Welsh Conservatives have welcomed the Welsh Government’s announcement of an all-Wales Restricted Zone for Bluetongue starting 10 November, bringing clarity for farmers and livestock markets after months of disruption.
While praising the decision, Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs, Samuel Kurtz MS stressed that vaccination remains essential and called on the Government to provide further support to the rural sector.
Commenting, Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs, Samuel Kurtz MS, said:
“I welcome the Welsh Government’s announcement of an all-Wales Restricted Zone for Bluetongue from 10 November, which will bring much-needed clarity for farmers and livestock markets after months of disruption.
“Our livestock markets are the backbone of the rural economy, and this change will provide vital support as they work to recover from the impact of trade restrictions. I urge the Welsh Government to see how else they can support our markets who have seen huge disruption in trade in recent months.
“However, the threat from Bluetongue remains. Vaccination is still the best defence against the disease, and I urge all farmers to speak to their vets and plan vaccination ahead of next spring.
“I will continue to stand up for the livestock sector and work with industry to maintain vigilance and ensure Welsh farming can move forward with confidence.”
