The Welsh Conservatives have called on the Football Association of Wales (FAW) to urgently clarify whether it will update its participation policy for girls' and women's football following the UK Supreme Court judgment on the Equality Act.
Natasha Asghar has written to FAW Chief Executive Noel Mooney seeking confirmation that the governing body will align its policy with those already adopted by the Football Association and the Scottish Football Association, both of which now restrict participation in women's and girls' football to biological females.
In her letter, Natasha Asghar also asks what immediate steps the FAW is taking to protect women and girls in the sport and requests details of the review the organisation has been undertaking since meeting campaigners from the Women's Rights Network last year.
Natasha Asghar MS, Shadow Minister for Health and Social Care, said:
"The Football Association and Scottish Football Association have already acted following the Supreme Court's judgment, yet the Football Association of Wales is still waiting for direction from the Welsh Government.
"With the EHRC's updated guidance due to come into force early next month, the FAW should now confirm whether it will update its participation policy for the start of the new season. The FAW also needs to outline the steps it is taking to guarantee safety in women's football.
"I've written to the FAW seeking answers because players, parents and clubs deserve to know where they stand before the new season gets underway.”
