During Spokesperson’s Questions to Labour’s Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice, Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice, Dr Altaf Hussain MS, has called on the Welsh Government to urgently address concerning failures in protecting domestic abuse victims.
Jonathan’s House, a refuge for men seeking to heal and rebuild their lives after experiencing abuse, have raised concerns about the Rail to Refuge and Road to Rescue schemes, currently the schemes require referral from a domestic abuse helpline.
Responding to his Spokesperson’s Questions, Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice, Dr Altaf Hussain MS, said:
“The findings from Jonathan’s House are deeply concerning. They highlight the real and growing need for improved support for male victims of domestic abuse.
“Current schemes must be made more accessible. Survivors should not face additional barriers at a time when they are most vulnerable and refuges should be able to refer directly, not solely rely on national helplines.
“In the Senedd today, I urged the Welsh Labour Government’s Cabinet Secretary to improve support for male domestic abuse survivors. We must ensure that anyone fleeing domestic violence, regardless of gender, has access to safe and reliable transport to a refuge.”
