Following a Senedd committee’s inquiry into the Welsh Government and local authority responses to winter storms, the Welsh Conservatives have reiterated their concerns that the Labour Welsh Government are underprepared for extreme weather events this winter and have not done enough to support residents following previous winter storms in late 2024.
Commenting, Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change and the Environment, Janet Finch-Saunders MS said:
“The Senedd’s report confirms what residents and businesses told us a year ago, that the Welsh Government’s response to Storm Darragh fell far short of what was needed.
“Emergency payments of £500 or £1,000 barely scratched the surface for families facing tens of thousands of pounds worth of damage, leaving many to shoulder huge costs alone.
“Storm Darragh was a wake-up call, but Labour failed to learn the lessons. With another storm season fast approaching, people across Wales will be asking: what has really changed to make their businesses and homes safer this time?”
