On Politics Live, Plaid Cymru’s Cefin Campbell made numerous claims about supposed research into the effects of a tourism tax on the sector in Wales. The points made were not based in fact, particularly as regards to Wales’ competitiveness.

Commenting on the news, Welsh Conservative Shadow Tourism Minister, Tom Giffard MS said:

“I was astonished to see a Plaid Cymru Senedd Member go on live television to claim that ‘all the research’ into the effects of a tourism tax pointed to it having no effect on the number of visitors when the opposite is true.

“In fact, the consultation documents make the admission themselves that these taxes reduce competitiveness and slash the number of visitors.

“With up to 200,000 jobs that rely on the tourism industry at stake, there is simply no room for error when it comes to the consultation. It is our view that the policy should be scrapped, immediately.”
