The Welsh Conservatives have called for the Chief Executive of Dŵr Cymru to appear before the Welsh Parliament’s Climate Change Committee as a matter of urgency to explain the rationale behind the company’s plan to cut 500 jobs, around 12% of its workforce, despite recent record bill rises and ongoing failures to tackle sewage pollution across Wales.
Commenting, Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change and the Environment, Janet Finch-Saunders MS said:
“Last year alone, sewage was discharged into our rivers, lakes, and seas for a staggering 968,000 hours, while Dŵr Cymru customers faced one of the highest water bills in England and Wales.
“With record pollution incidents and fines for underperformance, questions need to be answered as to how cutting so many employees will help deliver a better service.
“Questions need to be answered also as to how the company has reached the figure of 500; the time frame for the redundancies; the impact on all the workforce’s welfare; whether a solid business plan is in place; and much more.
“The best and mature way for us to secure answers for the staff at Welsh Water and the people of Wales is by requesting that the new Chief Executive of Dŵr Cymru come before the Senedd’s Climate Change Committee urgently so to explain the plan and answer questions from myself, and the other Members present.”
