Following data from Sands, the UK’s leading pregnancy and baby loss charity, which highlights that Wales continues to have a higher stillbirth rate than the rest of the UK, with limited progress in reducing neonatal deaths. Welsh Conservative Spokesperson for Health & Social Care, Peter Fox has called for immediate action to reduce these shocking numbers and follow the trend in England, where targets have been introduced to reduce the number of baby deaths.

Welsh Conservative Spokesperson for Health and Social Care, Peter Fox, has already signed Sands’ pledge calling for improved care and stronger action to reduce baby deaths, and has called for urgent steps to address the figures, including learning from approaches taken in England.

Commenting Welsh Conservative Spokesperson for Health & Social Care, Peter Fox, said:

“The loss of a baby is heartbreaking, and it is deeply concerning that Wales continues to record higher rates of stillbirth and neonatal death than the rest of the UK.

“Families in Wales should be able to rely on consistently high-quality maternity care and compassionate bereavement support. The next Welsh Government should learn from approaches in England, where the introduction of clear national targets has helped focus efforts and improve outcomes.

“A Welsh Conservative Government would establish a dedicated mother and baby unit in North Wales, publish more detailed maternity outcomes data, and deliver on our wider commitments set out in our health manifesto to improve maternity services, strengthen the workforce and raise standards of care across Wales.”
