Figures uncovered by the Welsh Conservatives have found that social housing waiting lists in Wales have been as long as 17 and a half years.
Commenting on the news, Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Housing, Janet Finch-Saunders MS said:
“The state of housing in Wales is a national embarrassment. Labour ministers should be ashamed of themselves.
“A quarter of a century of wilful neglect of housing stock in Wales has deeply affected hard working families across the country.
“Labour ministers must abandon their dogmatic pursuit of increasing the number of politicians and listen to our calls to build 100,000 homes over the next 10 years including 40,000 social homes.”
The worst offending councils were:
- Pembrokeshire with a waiting time of 17 and a half years.
- Caerphilly with a waiting time of 17 years.
- Cardiff with a waiting time of 16 and a half years.
- Newport with a waiting time of almost 12 and a half years.
In Wales, Labour have built 6,000 homes a year whilst demand is double that at 12,000.
