Welsh Conservatives have responded to news that Cardiff City FC is being investigated by the FA over claims of racist abuse.
A youngster in the club’s academy is alleged to have been subjected to ‘monkey noises’ and had bananas rubbed into his clothes.
Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Sport, Tom Giffard, said:
“I was horrified to hear about the alleged abuse that this young footballer was subjected to, and I am pleased to see the FA taking swift action.
“It is important that clubs not only train these players to be the best they can on the pitch, but also as human beings.
“It is incumbent on football academies to provide a safe environment for these young players.”
Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Equalities, Altaf Hussain, added:
“Distressing and appalling racist incidents in sport are becoming more frequent and it’s vital that we do more to tackle the issue.
“Racism in sport – either online or in person – is simply unacceptable, and governments, sports bodies and clubs need to work together to stamp it out for good.”
