Speaking after the address to the nation and the Commonwealth today (April 5) on the Covid-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic by Her Majesty the Queen, Paul Davies AM – the Leader of the Welsh Conservative Assembly Group – said:
“The gravity of the situation we in Wales, the rest of the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth, and the world find ourselves in is demonstrated by Her Majesty the Queen’s address earlier this evening.
“Only four times before – during the Gulf War in 1991, the death of Princess Diana, the death of The Queen Mother, and at her Diamond Jubilee – has Her Majesty made an address like this.
“As ever, she captured the mood of the nation exactly right; this is unsurprising as Her Majesty has lived through times of national crisis before, and indeed herself served in World War Two, has seen 14 Prime Ministers of our United Kingdom, and is the figurehead that we look to for reassurance.
“Whatever our political leanings, we surely all agree with her words of thanks and praise for all the men and women of the NHS, our emergency services, our Armed Forces, the supermarket staff, and delivery drivers, everyone who is doing their utmost to fight, and to defeat, Coronavirus.
“We should listen to the advice of the scientists, epidemiologists, and virologists advising Governments. These men and women – while not directly treating those with Coronavirus – are just as vital in the battle to combat this pandemic.
“As before, we shall prevail and we shall come through these dark days, and when we do – whoever we are – we will continue to show our gratitude to all those who brought us through it.”
