North Wales left behind on grassroots football funding

Gareth Davies

Following his Spokesperson’s Questions, Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism and Sport, Gareth Davies MS, highlighted the inadequate funding for grassroots football in Wales, particularly in North Wales.

Mr. Davies also highlighted the deeper issues that sees Wales currently ranking third from bottom in Europe for sports and sports funding per capita, behind the UK average and comparable nations.

Commenting, Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism and Sport, Gareth Davies MS, said:

“Football is more than just a game, it’s part of our national identity and particularly in North Wales, it plays a vital role in bringing communities together. Football is not only culturally significant, it offers a unique opportunity to regenerate some of our most deprived areas, tackle health inequalities, and provide a real sense of local pride.

“Yet, Labour’s investment in grassroots football facilities remains wholly inadequate and it’s part of a much wider crisis in sports funding. With Wales sitting third from bottom in Europe for sports investment per person, it’s clear this is a systemic failure.

“We need to see a radical uplift in funding for grassroots football and sports facilities, especially in areas like North Wales, where many feel ignored and left behind by this Labour Government.”
