Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change and the Environment has welcomed the banning of wet wipes containing plastics in Wales. Janet Finch-Saunders MS has long campaigned for these measures and although this is a positive move, it has taken far too long to reach this point.
Approximately 11 billion wet wipes are used throughout the UK, every year. They are reportedly behind 93 percent of blockages in UK sewers.
Commenting, Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change and the Environment, Janet Finch-Saunders MS, said:
“Wet wipes can be a huge burden on our sewage system and a single wet wipe is enough to start a blockage in a sewer pipe risking catastrophic flooding in homes and businesses.
"I am pleased to see this long-overdue step finally being taken, but it highlights the need for greater urgency and ambition in tackling the environmental challenges we face.
“A ban on wet wipes has been a long-standing Welsh Conservative proposal, demonstrating our commitment to meaningful change in waste management and environmental protection.”
