Today, a Welsh Government statement confirmed reports from last month that tuition fees in Wales will rise again. The Welsh Conservatives have warned that higher fees will discourage pupils from pursuing further study, especially at a time when apprenticeships opportunities are lacking in Wales and many young people are already struggling to find meaningful employment. This increase is yet another barrier for those trying to build their futures.
The Labour Minister admitted last year that she raised tuition fees to offset Labour’s National Insurance hike, proving that decisions taken by both Labour Governments are directly harming young people.
Commenting, Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Education, Natasha Asghar MS, said:
“Labour’s decision to hike tuition fees yet again is a slap in the face to young people in Wales who are already facing dwindling opportunities and rising costs. At a time when apprenticeship opportunities are lacking and meaningful employment is harder to find, making education more expensive simply puts another barrier in their way.
“This is the direct consequence of Labour’s financial mismanagement in both Cardiff Bay and Westminster. Instead of supporting the next generation, they are passing the bill on to them.
“Our education system is broken, Wales deserves better, only the Welsh Conservatives have a credible plan to fix education and fix Wales.”
