Welsh Conservatives have today (March 2), renewed their call for the private hydropower sector in Wales to be supported by the Welsh Government after an industry body described the situation as being “on a cliff edge” as business rates relief is to be withdrawn next month.
The Shadow Minister for Climate Change, Energy and Rural Affairs – Janet Finch-Saunders MS – said :
“On one hand, a climate emergency is announced in Wales and people, including the many farmers who operate these small-scale ventures, look for ways to both diversify their income while ‘greening’ Wales, while on the other, Labour says it will withdraw the grants for business rates relief to these operators.
“There are more than 50 small-scale hydro operators – mostly farmers – who will be adversely affected by this decision, and it sends a very damaging message to others who might consider investing in hydropower schemes for the benefit of our environment.
“The contradictory messaging by Labour shows a lack of commitment to green and renewable energy in Wales, and to the Welsh farming sector."
