Responding to the news that oversight of what was the UK's largest opencast coalmine has been described as a case of "epic mismanagement", James Evans MS, Shadow Rural Affairs Minister, said:

“The Welsh Government must get a grip on this situation before the mine becomes more dangerous.

“The council and the company who profited from this mine both have a responsibility here to the residents concerned about the safe restoration of the site.

“Labour must take a more hands-on approach to this issue and ensure the restoration of the site goes ahead, so local residents can feel safe.”
