8th June 2025 marks ten years since Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board was placed in special measures. When Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board first entered special measures in 2015, 86,845 pathways were waiting to start treatment, that figure now stands at 198,976. Back in 2015, just two people were waiting more than two years for treatment, now 5,747 people are waiting. Furthermore, in 2015 15% of patients waited more than 4 hours in A&E services, that figure is now 32% of patients.
The Welsh Labour Government, propped up routinely by Plaid Cymru, has now seen Betsi spend longer in special measures than any other organisation in the history of the National Health Service.
In light of this, the Welsh Conservatives have been calling for a public inquiry into Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board and have brought forward a Senedd motion calling on the Welsh Labour Government to initiate this, but both Welsh Labour and Plaid Cymru voted against these calls today.
Commenting after the vote, Welsh Conservative Shadow Secretary for North Wales, Gareth Davies MS, said:
“The people of North Wales have been failed by successive Labour Governments, routinely propped up by Plaid, mismanaging our Health Board.
“Instead of continuing to ignore the concerns of North Wales residents, as they have done by denying them an inquiry into over a decade of decline, they should be standing up for patients who have been badly let down.
“Only the Welsh Conservatives will deliver that public inquiry into Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board as part of our plan to fix Wales.”
The motion which was be debated today read:
To propose that the Senedd:
1. Notes that 8th June 2025 marks ten years since Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board was placed in special measures.
2. Calls on the Welsh Government to initiate a public inquiry into Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board.
