Labour and Plaid Cymru’s Help to Stay Scheme Not Working for Those in Need

During spokesperson’s questions to the Welsh Government, the Welsh Conservatives raised serious concerns that more needs to be done to tackle homelessness and to keep people in their homes rather than in temporary accommodation.

Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Local Government and Housing, Joel James MS, asserted that while the Government’s ‘Help to Stay’ scheme has the potential to help alleviate the situation, it’s helped very few people.

Commenting after Spokesperson’s Questions, Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Local Government and Housing, Joel James MS, said:

“People can fall into housing difficulty through no fault of their own, and it’s right that governments have a system in place that supports families to stay their homes. Not only is it better for them, but it’s better for local authorities because it relieves pressure on homelessness services”

“The ‘Help to Stay’ scheme developed under the Labour-Plaid cooperation agreement was designed to help those facing repossession to stay in their homes, yet while repossessions have hit their highest level since 2019, in the last two years only five people have been helped to stay in their homes.

“This is a clear failure by the Welsh Government and they must urgently overhaul or replace this scheme if they are serious about helping people facing homelessness.”
