Plaid Cymru members have been branded “hypocritical” by the Welsh Conservatives following a spectacular U-turn in the Senedd today (Nov 30).
In their 2021 Senedd manifesto, Plaid Cymru vowed to scrap Labour’s plans for Corporate Joint Committees. But tonight, Plaid members abandoned their commitment and voted in favour of regulations relating to Corporate Joint Committees.
Four Corporate Joint Committees, which the Welsh Conservatives are strongly against, are set to be created in Wales. They will be able to make decisions over transport and land use – sparking concerns from the Welsh Conservatives that councils will be stripped of powers and democracy.
Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Local Government, Sam Rowlands MS, said:
“This is just another example of Plaid Cymru politicians selling their souls after forming a coalition with Labour only a few days ago.
“Plaid had supported our calls for a Wales-specific COVID inquiry for months and opposed controversial NZVs, but since jumping into bed with Labour they’ve changed their mind and now it’s the same with Corporate Joint Committees.
“The sheer hypocrisy of Plaid Cymru members is astonishing and it will be interesting to see what else they change suddenly change their mind on over the next three years of this coalition.”
