Welsh Conservative Leader Darren Millar has called for the Chief Executive of the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board to be sacked following the publication of a damning report into Glan Clwyd Hospital’s Emergency Department.
Healthcare Inspectorate Wales undertook an unannounced inspection at the hospital’s A&E in May of this year and a follow up visit on the 25th and 26th August.
The initial inspection found that ‘overcrowding, corridor care, delays in patient flow, workforce pressures and risks to patient dignity, had become normalised despite being recognised through governance arrangements, incident reporting, staff feedback and previous scrutiny’.
As a result, the service was designated as a Service Requiring Significant Improvement by Healthcare Inspectorate Wales.
In their follow-up visit, inspectors found that insufficient progress had been made to be able to lift the designation.
The Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board has been subject to Welsh Government intervention and oversight since it was placed into special measures in June 2015.
Clwyd MS Darren Millar said:
“Enough is enough. It is time for heads to roll over the failings at the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, and that starts with the Chief Executive.
“People in North Wales are fed up of hearing hollow apologies, being told that improvements are on the way, and seeing nothing change.
“While frontline staff are working flat out and under pressure, they are not getting the support they need from senior leaders and that there is a serious problem with the culture in the organisation.
“It is clear that the current Chief Executive is simply not up to the job. It’s time for her to go.”
He added:
“The Welsh Government’s Special Measures arrangements aren’t working. We urgently need an independent review into Betsi’s failings to turn things around.”
