The Welsh Government’s decision to postpone the new GCSE History qualification until September 2026 has raised fresh concerns about their ability to deliver effective educational reforms. Amid ongoing challenges in education across Wales, the delay has left students, parents, and educators questioning whether sufficient support will be in place to meet the new deadline and ensure the reforms are implemented successfully.

Commenting, Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Education, Natasha Asghar MS, said:

“This delay comes against a backdrop of long-standing concerns over educational outcomes in Wales.

“While I understand the importance of ensuring schools and teachers are fully prepared, this delay does little to reassure students, parents, and educators that the necessary support will be in place by the revised deadline.

“As the Labour Government ploughs ahead with a multitude of changes to the education system in Wales, they must ensure that all educational reforms are not just delivered but delivered well.”
