The Campaign for Mathematical Sciences (CaMS) has expressed deep concern over Cardiff University’s proposal to downsize its internationally renowned mathematics department, a move that could worsen Wales’s ongoing shortage of qualified maths teachers and skilled STEM professionals.
The mathematics department at Cardiff University plays a critical role in developing the talent pipeline that Wales urgently needs to meet the growing demands of sectors like AI, data science, and engineering. These programmes not only generate a significant budget surplus but are also internationally respected for their contributions to research and education. Downsizing this department threatens to undermine Wales’s future competitiveness and innovation in key industries.
Commenting, Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Education, Natasha Asghar MS, said:
"Cutting Cardiff University's renowned mathematics department is a step in the wrong direction at a time when mathematics is crucial to shaping our future.
“Maths is the backbone of our future economy, from AI to engineering, and we cannot afford to undermine it. Additionally, Wales is already facing a critical shortage of maths teachers and this decision will undermine any recruitment drive to address the issue.
“The Labour Welsh Government has already stood aside to allow essential nursing courses to be cut, they must act urgently to protect this vital subject and our STEM talent pipeline."
