Russell George AM – the Shadow Minister for Transport – has said a large “thank you” on behalf of the Welsh Conservatives for all our seafarers are doing during the pandemic and lockdown to keep cargo moving in and out of the country.
He made his statement ahead of the midday sounding of ships’ horns at ports in Wales, the UK, and around the world in a tribute backed by industry body UK Chamber of Shipping and the charity Seafarers UK.
Mr George said:
“It is only right that we give our thanks to all those who – to borrow a phrase – are in peril on the seas.
“Day in, day out, all year round and sometimes in unimaginable conditions, seafarers carry our cargo, keep trade and the economy flowing, and catch much of our fish for us, or keep us safe, spending days or months from their families.
“So, if you live near the coast, throw open your windows at midday to hear the horns being sounded, and if you’re inland, perhaps also give a thought for our seafarers during this difficult time.”
