Russell George AM, the Welsh Conservative Shadow Transport Minister, said the decision by Great Western Railway (GWR) to reduce some services during the Covid-19 (Coronavirus) outbreak is “… the sensible thing to do”, but added a note of caution.
He said:
“All the advice given by medical and scientific experts is to socially-distance yourself and restrict travelling as much as possible, so to reduce rail services makes sense. Put simply, it’s the sensible thing to do.
“It means that those classed as essential workers, and those that just don’t have an option to work from home, can still get to work.
“But,” he cautioned, “It must also be an opportunity for our hardworking rail and transport infrastructure employees to regroup, and get the stations and trains absolutely clean through the enhanced hygiene procedures that have been implemented.”
Mr George also welcomed announcements by both GWR and Transport for Wales (TfW) that – temporarily – the companies will make it easier for people to rearrange their travel plans.
He advised passengers to visit gwr.com/safety and tfwrail.wales/covid-19 for advice and updates.
