To help stem the flow of Covid-19 (Coronavirus) and to prevent NHS Wales becoming swamped with cases, Angela Burns AM, the Shadow Health Minister, has warned against all unnecessary travel this weekend – especially to holiday cottages and second homes.
Mrs Burns said:
“The weather is forecast to be good this weekend, and as we have seen previously – despite the strict instructions issued on social distancing, self-isolating, and keeping at least six feet away from people outside your household – good weather encourages some people to flout the rules.
“Let me be absolutely clear: if you travel unnecessarily, if you intend to go to a holiday cottage or second home away from your usual residence, you are putting yourself, your family, and others – including our hardworking frontline nursing and medical staff – at risk of developing Coronavirus.
“And if you fall ill while away, you risk swamping local hospitals already working at full capacity to deal with this pandemic.”
Her Welsh Conservative colleague, Andrew RT Davies AM, earlier today lambasted groups of walkers seen queuing next to each other 12-deep to cross a stile.
“Put simply,” she said, “if you start moving around the country or going out for no good reason, then you’re being selfish, and it could mean that harsher restrictions on travelling will be imposed."
