Clwyd West AM Darren Millar welcomed action by Conwy County Borough Council to allow a temporary change to the Sunday trading enforcement regime to help NHS staff and other key workers.
Mr Millar has also written to the First Minister asking him to relax Sunday trading laws to allow greater flexibility for key workers to shop during the Covid-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic.
Some supermarkets are allowing doctors, nurses, and other essential workers into their stores to shop from 9am on a Sunday, before they open to the public at 10am. However, although the early shoppers can gather their supplies while shelves are well stocked, due to existing trading laws they are unable to pay for their goods until 10am.
The leader of Conwy County Borough Council, Cllr Sam Rowlands, has told Mr Millar that the council will not be waiting for the Welsh Government to act, and the changes will be allowed with immediate effect.
Mr Millar said:
“This is great news and will be a big help to our hard-working NHS staff and other key workers during these challenging times.
“We are living in extraordinary times that require fast decisions to accommodate changing demands, and I must urge the First Minister to follow suit and bring in this temporary relaxation of the laws – and fast"
