Commenting on the closure of the Laura Ashley factory in Newtown, local Member of the Welsh Parliament and Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Business, Economy and Infrastructure, Russell George MS, said:
“The further job losses that have been announced is devastating news and couldn't have come at a worse time as we go through the severe economic hardship which has been brought about by the Coronavirus pandemic.
“I’m further concerned that the current Coronavirus pandemic is detracting from what would be such a significant story in normal times.
“I would like to extend my sympathy to all of Laura Ashley's staff and all of those in the wider supply chain who will be adversely affected by this news.
“Many have fought hard to retain the company's presence here in Mid Wales. Laura Ashley has been an iconic part of the Mid Wales economy and an internationally-renowned company for the best part of 60 years, employing highly-skilled and loyal staff.
“I am aware that both the UK and Welsh Governments remain prepared to offer packages of support to any investor working toward the retention of operations in Newtown.
“I will be again be raising with the First Minister, and Economy Minister. The Welsh Government needs to be supporting those that have been made redundant and have been affected.”
