After 20 years of Welsh Labour running the NHS in Wales only the Welsh Conservatives will transform our Welsh NHS to make it resilient and able to adapt to patients’ needs now and in the future.

Thanks to Boris Johnson and the UK Conservative Government, the Welsh Labour Government will be getting an additional £1.9 billion to spend on our Welsh NHS. However, despite the hard-work and dedication of our Welsh NHS staff, patients still feel let down as they are not receiving the service they deserve when they use the NHS.

The Welsh Conservatives have a 10-point plan to empower NHS staff and local people to boost services and enable accountability within our Welsh NHS.

It is only with your support that we can deliver a Welsh NHS fit for the 21st century that delivers for patients and enables staff to do what they do best – care for people.

Welsh Conservatives 10-point Welsh NHS Improvement and Accountability Plan

  • Recruit more doctors, nurses and other health professionals: Increase workforce capacity to improve access to appointments and treatment, and address the recruitment crisis caused by years of poor workforce planning by Welsh Labour.
  • Build new Rapid Diagnostic Centres: Establish new diagnostic centres in North, Mid and South Wales to speed up access to diagnostic tests and reduce the need for repeat appointments and visits to hospitals.
  • Extend access to new treatments: Reduce unnecessary bureaucracy so that doctors can use the most advanced, life-saving treatments for cancer, rare diseases, and other conditions such as arthritis.
  • Transform mental health: Treat mental health with the same urgency as physical health and legislate to provide extra support for people with learning disabilities and autism.
  • Improve emergency care: Review ambulance response times and emergency department performance to ensure that patients get rapid access to emergency care when they need it.
  • Prioritise public health and prevention: Overhaul NHS screening and use new technology to prevent ill health. Develop a long-term strategy for lifestyle-related conditions such as obesity and addictions. We will have a national vaccination reminder system for every GP practice.
  • Address the democratic deficit and invest in Patient Watchdogs: The system of Welsh Ministerial appointments to health boards will come to an end with the introduction of elected health commissioners. We will protect the independence and capacity of Wales’ Community Health Councils.
  • Ensure that the Welsh NHS learns from mistakes: There will be a duty on all NHS staff to disclose and record when things go wrong, including providing details to senior managers and reporting them to the healthcare inspectorate.
  • Eradicate poor NHS leadership: There will be a Welsh NHS Leadership Council which all senior managers and executives will be required to register with. Those found responsible for serious NHS failings will be deemed incompetent, removed from the register and prevented from working in the Welsh health service.
  • Improve NHS safety: There will be a radical overhaul of the healthcare inspectorate to make it entirely independent of Welsh Government and give it new powers to intervene quickly when problems are identified.
